Campbell County Schools
The Museum Committee has begun the transition of exhibits in the Historic Courthouse Museum. Many items of the World War II exhibits have been returned to their lenders, while others will remain on display in the Witness Room for planned Veterans Day activities. WW II items on display this fall also will include uniforms and others items not previously shown.
The Jury Room is being prepared with new exhibits. These include a recent acquisition, an oil portrait of William Anselm Clark. Displays of photographs portray prominent homes and structures of Rustburg. Several displays feature the Agricultural Fair of 1913. Additional items from the 1913 fair are sought.
Campbell County Schools will be prominent features in these new exhibits - but we need your help… We need all CCHS members to join with the committee.
School histories are a means to draw the entire county together in the historic courthouse. From private academies or tutors to the beginnings of public schools… One- room schools… Two- rooms… Community schools and rural schools… We hope to have photographs and memories of every school, but we need your help to do that.
As with the WW II exhibits, the Historic Courthouse Museum serves as a focal point to ongoing research efforts. We are working to compile information, photographs, and artifacts to be featured in a future book, Campbell County in World War II. An oral history project accompanies the book project, to gather the memories of veterans and family members, and of home front experiences.
The Museum Committee will take the lead to compile information regarding Campbell Co. schools. Oral histories will be recorded. Photographs, documents, and other items are needed. Research help is needed, to help locate the school sites, and to identify, record, and photograph surviving structures. GPS data will help to pinpoint sites and with efforts to add school sites to a comprehensive map of Campbell Co. and its history, to show the schools and villages along with the old roads, mills, prominent homes, and as many churches as we can locate.
As we step toward these long-term goals, we are focusing now on exhibits to be ready before Veterans Day.
Please check your attics, bookshelves, and scrapbooks. We are interested in names of teachers and of students, photos of schools, and other items. Do you remember the bucket, taken to the spring, or drawn from the well, and the dipper shared by the students? We are looking for good examples of these items, for display in the museum. Perhaps you could send us a photo or description of an early desk, with folding seat and inkwell. Does anyone have a bench from an early school, photos of classroom interiors, slates used to write lessons? Of course, if you see items that are WW II- related, keep us in mind and let us know what we may copy, scan, gather for display, or add to the lists of men and women who served.
